This holiday season Apple TV+ is singing “All I Want for Christmas is Mariah Carey”!
On Monday, Apple announced that they have indeed made a deal with the Christmas Queen for a holiday special, Mariah Carey’s Magical Christmas Special. It will debut globally on Apple TV+ this holiday season in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of Carey’s iconic holiday anthem “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”
The special will have a number of surprise guest appearances, yet to be announced, and will “combine music, dancing and animation driven by a universally heartwarming story that brings the world together,” Apple said in their announcement.
The holiday special will be produced by Carey who is joined by a powerhouse group of producers and directors who are no strangers to holiday specials and global televised events. Ian Stewart, Raj Kapoor and Ashley Edens are signed on as executive producers who were behind projects like The Disney Family Singalong, John Legend’s A Legendary Christmas with John and Chrissy, The Little Mermaid Live!, and the London Olympic opening and closing ceremonies.
The special will be co-directed by BAFTA Award winner Hamish Hamilton known for projects such as the Oscars, Super Bowl halftime shows, and the London Olympics opening and closing ceremonies. Assisting in co-directing is Oscar nominee and Golden Globe winner Roman Coppola from Mozart in the Jungle, Moonrise Kingdom, A Very Murray Christmas, and will also executive producer on the project.
Carey is going to have a busy last few months of 2020. In addition to the holiday special she is releasing a memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, on September 29th. She has also been opening up her vault and releasing never-before-seen photos and videos to commemorate the 30th anniversary of her debut album. On top of all of that she will be releasing the The Rarities album on October 2nd.
Apple hasn’t announced a specific date for when the holiday special will debut.
