The CW’s Batwoman will be replacing Kate Kane completely rather than just recasting following the exit of star Ruby Rose.
Though Kate Kane has generally always been Batwoman, it’s not unusual within world of superhero comics for multiple characters to take on the role of a single superhero. There have been five different individuals who have acted as Robin to Bruce Wayne’s Batman and three different alter-egos who have put on the mantle of Batgirl.
Such is the route that Batwoman will be taking on with the upcoming second season.
According to Deadline, the lead character on Batwoman will no longer be Kate Kane, as it is in the comics, but will instead be an entirely new character.
The show had initially planned to simply recast for the character of Kate Kane; however, now the show will now be going in a different — and slightly more sensical and elegant — solution to their challenge.
According to a leaked casting call for the part, the new Batwoman is a character is named Ryan Wilder and will be younger than Katy Kane, with the casting call looking for someone to play a character in their mid-to-late 20s.
The character is described is described as “likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed” and is “nothing like Kate Kane, the woman who wore the batsuit before her.”
The new Batwoman is a former drug-runner who lives in her van with her plant. She is a highly skilled but wildly undisciplined fighter and — like her predecessor — is an out lesbian. Just like with Kate Kane before her, The CW will be looking for performers who identify as LGBTQ encouraged to submit for the role of Batwoman.
As of right now, it is unknown whether Ryan is a newly created character solely for the show or is a code name for an existing DC character. Either way, it’s sure that Season 2 of the CW show will show how Ryan takes on the mantle of the new Batwoman.
