She had the time of her life back in ’87, now Jennifer Grey is planning to return to Dirty Dancing for a sequel!
On Thursday Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer confirmed that the iconic romantic drama has a sequel in the works. “It will be exactly the kind of romantic, nostalgic movie that the franchise’s fans have been waiting for and that have made it the biggest-selling library title in the company’s history.”
Not only is Jennifer Grey officially on board to return in the starring role of Frances “Baby” Houseman, she is also an executive producer on the project. Jonathan Levine (50/50) and Gillian Bohrer (Twilight) will serve as directors, while Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis (Five Feet Apart) will write the screenplay for the Dirty Dancing sequel.
Since the news was just announced, plot details are next to none at the moment. Hopefully they return to the resort in the Catskills from the original movie. One plotline they surely have to address is Patrick Swayze’s heartthrob character and Baby’s love interest, Johnny Castle. Swayze tragically passed away from pancreatic cancer in September 2009.
The original film inspired mediocre projects decades later including a Dirty Dancing TV series, a musical, the 2004 film Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, Dirty Dancing 3: Capoeira Nights in 2010, and a TV movie on ABC in 2017. Hopefully this sequel will live up to the original film’s legacy.
It is still too early to know when Baby will come out of the corner and grace the big screen.
