Disney+ is developing ‘Once on This Island’ musical adaptation

Disney+ is planning on bringing more Broadway into your homes.

Hot off the heels of the immense success of the film version of Hamilton, Disney+ has announced they are developing a musical adaptation of Once on This Island.

Unlike Hamilton, which was a filmed version of the stage show, the 2018 Tony Award winner for Best Revival of a Musical will be a traditional live-action film adaptation.

The story of Once on This Island is based on Rosa Guy’s 1985 novel My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl. “Once on This Island is the sweeping, universal tale of Ti Moune, a fearless peasant girl in search of her place in the world, and ready to risk it all for love. Guided by the mighty island gods, Ti Moune sets out on a remarkable journey to reunite with the man who has captured her heart.”

Since the adaptation is still in the early stages of development not much has been announced. What we do know is writer Jocelyn Bioh (Russian Doll, She’s Gotta Have It) is attached for the film adaptation along with producer Marc Platt (La La Land) and director Wanuri Kahiu, the Kenyan filmmaker behind 2018’s LGBTQ film Rafiki.

There are high hopes that some of the Broadway revival’s original cast will return for the film, but since casting is still a long way off at the moment, that is news that will have to wait.

You can watch the Once on This Island performance from the 2018 Tony Awards below. The performance features Tony nominees Hailey Kilgore for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical, and Alex Newell for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical.
