HBO Max picks up ‘Hair Love’ for original animated series

Winner of Best Animated Short Film at the 2020 Oscars, Hair Love will be getting its own animated series at HBO Max.

The new animated series based on the short film will be called Young Love and will be helmed by the short film’s creator Matthew A. Cherry with Sony Pictures Animation.

Cherry released a statement saying, “I am beyond excited to continue telling the story of Stephen, Angela and Zuri and further explore the family dynamics of a young Black millennial family we established in our short film Hair Love as an animated series. Couldn’t ask for better partners in Sony Pictures Animation and HBO Max in helping us get Young Love out to the world.”

HBO Max has given the original animated series a 12 episode order for the first season. In terms of casting, though Issa Rae voiced the mom, Angela, in the short film there has been no official announcement as to who will lend their voices to the Young family in the series. In addition, no premiere date has been given as of yet.
