Rejoice, Superman fans! It looks like Henry Cavill could be donning the blue tights once more and returning as the DCEU’s Superman!
Though it was never officially confirmed by Warner Bros. that Cavill had left the role of Superman behind, reports surfaced in 2018 that he had stepped away from the role due to the major shake-up at Warner Bros. post-Justice League.
Other than few cryptic tweets, Cavill remained quiet on the subject, and when Shazam featured a Superman cameo that wasn’t Henry Cavill, it seemingly confirmed that his time as Superman was over.
However, a new report from Deadline, who first revealed the exclusive, stated that Henry Cavill is currently in talks to reprise his role as Superman in Warner Bros. DCEU, though not in a standalone.
According to Deadline’s sources, rather than starring in a true Man of Steel sequel, Henry Cavill would instead make cameos in future DC films which are the next productions to be prepped after coronavirus safety restrictions are lifted — the Shazam sequel, Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam or the Aquaman sequel.
Wonder Woman 1984 and James Gunn’s Suicide Squad reboot are already completed, so it’s highly unlikely that Henry Cavill would make cameos as they have already finished production. Matt Reeves’ The Batman is reportedly not in the same DCEU timeline, which means that Cavill would also not make a cameo in it.
The first hint to fans that they might see Henry Cavill don the Superman suit once again when the actor participated in Zack Snyder’s Vero Man of Steel watch party last week. That watch party was where Zack Snyder announced announced — with a fair bit of teasing and prodding from Cavill himself — that the long-awaited Snyder Cut of Justice League would be released on HBO Max.
And though Cavill isn’t set to star in a standalone Superman movie at this moment, there’s no telling what might change if Zack Snyder’s Justice League is well-received.
