When in doubt over who will tell your life story the best, just do it yourself!
Universal Pictures confirmed that it is developing the untold true story of Madonna’s life as a movie. The pop icon is set to direct her own story from a script she’s currently co-writing with Diablo Cody who won an Oscar for Juno.
Madonna is obviously best known for her decades long music career, but the pop star is no stranger to Hollywood or the big screen. In the past, she has starred in titles like Evita, Desperately Seeking Susan, and A League of Their Own.
The untitled biopic will be produced by Madonna and three-time Academy Award-nominee Amy Pascal (Little Women, The Post). Pascal and Madonna’s work together goes back to when they first worked on A League of Their Own. The movie will follow Madonna’s rise to prominence as the culture-shaping musician, actress, director, author, and entrepreneur she is today.
In her biopic announcement, Madonna said, “I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer— a human being, trying to make her way in this world. The focus of this film will always be music. Music has kept me going and art had kept me alive. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me. It’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of my life with my voice and vision.”
The film will surely highlight all of Madonna’s achievements throughout her illustrious career. To date, across her five-decade career Madonna has sold 335 million records worldwide, and remains the highest-grossing solo touring artist of all time. Her most recent album, 2019’s Madame X, debuted at No. 1, becoming her ninth studio set to do so. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008, and has earned more than 650 global award nominations for her work. Outside of her music and film career she has fought hard for LGBTQ+ rights and gender equality, as well as being an advocate for vulnerable children through her non-profit organization Raising Malawi.
