It’s a big win for Netflix as Don’t Look Up will also star Jennifer Lawrence. McKay’s comedy tells the story of “two low-level astronomers, who must go on a giant media tour to warn mankind of an approaching asteroid that will destroy planet earth.”
Don’t Look Up will start filming in April and is set to release later this year on Netflix. McKay wrote the script for the comedy and he’ll also serve as a director. On top of that McKay will also act as a producer under Hyperobject Industries with Kevin Messick. Mckay’s most recent film VICE received eight Academy Award nominations.
Lawrence previously won an Oscar for Best Actress for her role in Silver Linings Playbook. Additionally, she has been nominated for Oscars for her role in Joy, American Hustle and Winter’s Bone. Just recently Lawrence wrapped production on an Untitled film from acclaimed director Lila Neugebauer. Which she starred in and also produced alongside Justine Polsky under Excellent Cadaver.
Talking about the film’s release on Netflix McKay commented, “I’m so thrilled to make this movie with Jen Lawrence. She’s what folks in the 17th century used to call “a dynamite act”. And the fact that Netflix sees this movie as a worldwide comedy sets the bar high for me and my team in an exciting and motivating way.”
While the head of Netflix films Scott Stuber said, “Adam has always had great timing when it comes to making smart, relevant and irreverent films that depict our culture. Even if he somehow ends up predicting planet Earth’s imminent demise, we’re excited to add this to our slate before it all comes to an end.”
