In 2011, author Ernest Cline released his first hit novel Ready Player One which reached #1 on the New York Times bestseller list for over 100 weeks and received multiple awards across the literary world. The novel follows Wade Watts living in the dystopian future of 2045 as he enters The Oasis (a virtual universe) on a treasure hunt in hopes of bettering his own life by winning the creator’s fortune.
The novel was eventually adapted for the big screen in 2018 by Cline himself, along with screenwriter Zak Penn and directed by Steven Spielberg bringing in over $580 million from the box office.
Cline confirmed that he was working on the sequel before the film was released which has bought its own set of challenges for the writer. Before the movie was released Cline said to The Hollywood Reporter there are challenges that come with the novel being released after the movie, and needing to make sure it is a true continuation of the book rather than the film.
