Jane Austen’s Persuasion has found its leading lady in Sarah Snook for the upcoming adaptation.

Fox Searchlight is planning on a film adaptation of Jane Austen’s 1887 novel. This will be the sixth iteration of the classic novel adapted for the screen, but the first time it is produced for the big screen. It has had multiple television miniseries and teleplays as well as a number of theatre adaptations over the past ten years.

Persuasion tells the story of a second-chance romance. It follows Anne Elliot, who at 27 is considered an old maid. Years before, Anne broke off her engagement with naval officer Frederick Wentworth under pressure from her family. But Wentworth returns from war a decorated officer and the two cross paths for the first time in seven years. Anne starts to wonder if she made a mistake and reflects on her regrets.

Snook, who currently stars in HBO’s hit drama Succession, which is going into its third season, is set to play the role of Anne Elliott. Snook is also nominated for an Emmy for her portrayal of Siobhan “Shiv” Roy in Succession for the 2020 Emmy’s.

Behind the scenes Mahalia Belo is directing Persuasion under Fox Searchlight. Alison Own and Debra Hayward will be producing under their Monumental Pictures banner, and Jessica Swale (Summerland) is writing the adaptation.

There is no word yet as to who will be the Frederick to Snook’s Anne.
