Plans for a third season of Netflix’s Mindhunter may be scrapped.
After the second aired last summer there were plans to have a third season. However, in early 2020 the series creator and executive producer David Fincher was feeling less confident but wasn’t shutting out the possibility of revisiting the crime series in the future.
In an interview with Vulture, Fincher himself broke the news that season 3 is being shelved. “It’s a 90-hour workweek. It absorbs everything in your life,” said Fincher of bringing the series to life. “When I got done, I was pretty exhausted and I said, ‘I don’t know if I have it in me right now to break season 3.”
He already has another project in the works with Netflix outside of the Mindhunter series and went on to say, “Listen, for the viewership that it had, it was a very expensive show. But I honestly don’t think we’re going to be able to do it for less than I did season 2, And on some level, you have to be realistic— dollars have to equal eyeballs.”
Netflix hasn’t officially made a statement regarding the announcement, but a representative did confirm that season 3 is off the books. The streamer is still interested in revisiting the series somewhere further down the line. “Maybe in five years,” they said.
Season 1 and 2 of Mindhunter are available to stream on Netflix.
