According to author Stephenie Meyer, Midnight Sun was just the beginning of Twilight’s second wave.
After being shelved for 12 years because online leaks ruin everything, Midnight Sun — which is a retelling of the first Twilight book from the vampire Edward’s perspective — was officially released on August 4th, and its sales were huge! It sold over 1 million copies just in the U.S. in its first week and has hit #1 in both the U.S. and the U.K.
Since her explosive return to the vampire romance series this month, Meyer has officially revealed via a virtual Books-A-Million live event that she has more Twilight content in the works.
Meyer said, “There are two more books I think in the world that I want to write. I have got them outlined and a chapter written I think of the first one, so I know it’s there.”
However it sounds like fans are going to have to wait for the new stories. She said, “I am not ready to do that right now. I want to do something brand new. For me, the joy of writing comes from creating and I really want to do a new world and new rules and new mythology. Mythology is kind of my thing.”
Seeing the rest of the series through Edward’s perspective may not be likely. In an interview with USA Today the author talked about the difficulties of retelling an established story with established dialogue to align with the original novel. “Metaphorically, they were like prison bars,” Meyer said. “By far the most exciting part of writing this, hands down, is the fourth act where Edward and Bella are separated, so then I’m free to do whatever I want.”
Fans have speculated that Meyer could write New Moon from Jacob’s perspective, however, she would run into the same difficulties as she did Midnight Sun.
Regardless, fans might be waiting another 12 years for more Twilight content, but Twihards are some of the most dedicated fans and will surely be there to support Meyer with any new projects in the vampire-werewolf series.
