The dramatic rendition of the iconic Fresh Bring of Bel-Air has been picked up by Peacock!
That’s right, Bel-Air is coming to Peacock, and in a surprise move, the new streamer has already booked it for two seasons. Will Smith, who is attached as an executive producer, made the announcement via his YouTube channel. You can watch it here:
Peacock has described Bel-Air as a “serialized one-hour dramatic analogue of the 90’s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air that leans into the original premise: Will’s complicated journey from the streets of West Philadelphia to the gated mansions of Bel-Air. With a reimagined vision, Bel-Air will dive deeper into the inherent conflicts, emotions and biases that were impossible to fully explore in a 30-minute sitcom format, while still delivering swagger and nods to the original show.”
The reboot comes from the mind of Morgan Cooper. In 2019 he released a viral YouTube trailer that imagined what a dramatic take on the sitcom might look like.
In Smith’s video we see him breaking the news to Cooper and the writer of the reboot Chris Collins. “We have just officially closed the deal with Peacock with an unprecedented two-season-order from a pitch,” says Smith in the video. “I’ve been in this business for 30 years, and that does not happen. They ordered two full seasons of Bel-Air based on the quality of the pitch and the work that you guys have done. So I want to say congratulations. I am hyped.”
This is huge news for fans of the original series which also has a reunion special coming to HBO Max, where you can also stream the entire original series. The reunion will include most of the original cast members: Will Smith (Will), Tatyana Ali (Ashley), Karyn Parsons (Hilary), Joseph Marcell (Geoffrey), Daphne Maxwell Reid (Aunt Viv No. 2), DJ Jazzy Jeff (Jazz) and Alfonso Ribeiro (Carlton). Currently HBO Max is aiming for a Thanksgiving 2020 release.
