Ryan Murphy’s The Politician has given us our first look at season 2 and revealed that it will premiere on Netflix on Friday, June 19th
Season 2 of The Politician will follow Payton as he tries to unseat Dede Standish (played by Judith Light) in the New York State Senate race. As a long-time incumbent and greatly admired Senate Majority Leader with no-nonsense Chief of Staff, Hadassah Gold (played Bette Midler) at her side, Dede’s re-election was supposed to be easy.
However, Payton — who sees this as the next step on his path to the presidency — must decide what kind of politician he ultimately wants to be in order to succeed, even if that means exposing secrets, lies, and a throuple.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the second season of The Politician features seven episodes that were completed before the coronavirus pandemic.
The show stars Ben Platt, Gwyneth Paltrow, Zoey Deutch, Lucy Boynton, Bob Balaban, David Corenswet, Julia Schlaepfer, Laura Dreyfuss, Theo Germaine, Rahne Jones, Jessica Lange, and Benjamin Barrett. Season 2 will add Judith Light and Bettle Midler to the cast.
When discussing a potential third season, writer, showrunner and executive produce Ryan Murphy stated that he wanted to wait a few years before releasing it.
“I think where season 2 ends, what I would love to do is take a couple of years off and have Ben Platt get a little bit older for his final race,” Murphy said in an interview with Collider. “That would obviously be a presidential race, right? That’s always what we had designed, and I think that’s what our plan is.”
He added, “I’m going to wait. Ben is young, so I want to wait a couple of years to figure out how we age him up a little bit. But that’s always been my plan.”
