This year’s MTV VMA winners and highlights

Sunday night MTV held the first live awards show since the coronavirus pandemic with the 2020 VMAs.

Keke Palmer hosted the awards show this year, with a mix of live video but also quite a bit of pre-recorded video for the ceremony. Much of the night had Keke playing different characters with costumes and wigs for some added entertainment. The night itself was obviously shrouded with the reminder of the pandemic, but also with reminders of the civil unrest throughout the country consistently being brought up by award winners in their acceptance speeches.

Other highlights of the night include Miley Cyrus reliving her Wrecking Ball days during the performance of her new single Midnight Sky.

BTS performed for the first time ever at the VMAs. They premiered their English language song Dynamite with a high energy and choreography filled green screen performance.

The performance everyone is talking about is Lady Gaga’s medley of a few songs off her Chromatica album. Starting with Chromatica II into 911, being joined by Ariana Grande for Rain on Me, and ending with Stupid Love. Gaga and her performers wore masks the entire performance and in one of her spoken interludes she exclaimed “Be kind! Mask up! Be brave!” Lady Gaga was never seen without a mask the entire awards show, in fact she was wearing a different elaborate mask each time she was seen. She made sure she used the platform she has to fight the pandemic by encouraging everyone to be responsible, care about others, and wear a mask.

MTV also gave out a brand new award, the MTV Tricon Award, to none other than… Lady Gaga! The Tricon Award is for being a triple icon in music, acting, fashion, and activism, which is actually four things but are all quintessential Gaga. This year MTV didn’t give out the coveted Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Some are saying the Tricon is a rebranding of the award, so we shall see if that sticks in 2021.

The night also included multiple tributes to Chadwick Boseman, who Friday night lost his fight to colon cancer after four long years.

Below is the complete list of the winners of the 2020 VMA’s:
